(Dis)Embodying Enclosure: Of Straightened Muslim Men and Secular Masculinities
In this presentation, Piro Rexhepi considers how the racial reconfiguration of gender and sexuality served as spatializing and secularizing processes of post-Ottoman modernization in the Balkans where the orientation of Muslim subjects towards Europe was contingent on the straightening of their ambiguous sexualities. He looks at how the association of sexual deviance with the Islamic past became the post-Ottoman colonial imperative through which the Muslim man was saved and secularized by reclaiming his supposed pre-Islamic European heterosexuality; a process that shaped modern embodiments of secular masculinity. 

Bio:
Piro Rexhepi's research and writing focuses on decoloniality, sexuality and Islam. His recent work on racism and borders along the Balkan Refugee Route has been published in a range of mediums in and out of academia including the International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Critical Muslims and the Guardian among others. He is the author of White Enclosures: Racial Capitalism and Coloniality along the Balkan Route, Duke University Press (2022).

We hope to further and deepen the intersectionality of current debates about social justice, globally understood, by adding the commonly erased perspectives from the peripheralized Europe’s East. We also hope to build transnational connections and subaltern spaces that subvert and bypass imperial legacies and resist neocolonialism and the rise of the global right.
